I’m excited to be directing the University of Kansas Department of Theatre and Dance’s production of Paula Vogel’s play, “Indecent,” opening March 20 in the William Inge Memorial Theatre in Murphy Hall.

If you don’t know Indecent, it is a newer (2016) play about another, much older play: Sholem Asch’s Yiddish melodrama, The God of Vengeance. Asch’s play is notable for a variety of reasons, but earned the most condemnation from within and without the Jewish community for its “indecent” depiction of a romance between two women. (It also has the distinction of featuring the first romantic kiss between two female characters in Broadway history). We’ve put together an all-star team of Jewish and Jewish-adjacent collaborators, including my KU colleagues Renee Perelmutter in Jewish Studies and Stephanie Zelnick in the School of Music to help us tell this story.
